Life and ministry

Dunqula [father’s name unknown to me], better known as Bashuto, was born in _ _ _

She was the second wife of Shigute Dada (one of the early leaders of the “Kambata Evangelical Church” [later: Kale Heywet Church] in the Hadiyya area).

  • Shigute’s first wife, Talilei, was Bashuto’s older sister and passed away at young age.

After her sister Talilei passed away, Bashuto got married with Shigute Dada.

According to Erjabo Handiso, Bashuto was the most outstanding woman evangelist in the area. “She used to go to Addis for religious meetings and other affairs.”

Cf. Duff, Cords of Love, p. 367, quoting from a letter of Shigute in 1937:

  • “I am unable to tell all the matters I want to, but day by day when the Kambata Christians meet, your names are never forgotten. You should hear the women start the hymns in church! Tabalei and Bashuto take the lead. They are very strong and unafraid in their work for God. Oh, it gives me joy to think of them!”
  • Her fellow singer Tabalei was the wife of Tuloro, who assisted Duff as a general handy man. Cf. Duff, p. 170:
“Tuloro, who looked after my horses and acted as gardener, buyer of local building materials, and general handy man”.
  • An other early female gospel singer from the Hadiyya area was Hakalla Amale (DACB.org; Shigute was her uncle’s son; see profile on DACB.org)
