Bible Texts in ‘Falasha’

Songs of Songs in ‘Falasha’ [presumably Qwara]. Translation commissioned by James Bruce, probably in 1770/71. Bodleian Library, Bruce MS 94.

(adapted from a scan of the Bruce manuscript no. 94
at the Bodleian Library, Oxford)

Note

The (pejorative) term “Falasha” does not refer to a language, but rather to a Jewish community that calls itself Beta Israel.

Depending on the region where they lived, the Beta Israel spoke different languages. The language of the manuscript shown here is Qʷara (Girma G. and D. Appleyard, p. 96).
